We have experience with all sorts of makes, models and types of microscope and know that customers, companies, even countries have their preferences.
So when working with a customer we listen to your needs, likes and dislikes before recommending a microscope solution.

That said, we do tend to favour Olympus microscopes because we believe they have the best optics, the most robust frames, are trouble-free and will probably out-last any of us i.e. give years and years of reliable service. And in a destructive metallurgical testing lab that is saying something!

Olympus also have a superlative range of transmitted light microscopes ideal for biological testing.

All of the microscopes we design for you are specific to your requirements. Even if two labs are performing the same test they may choose differing microscopes for examining their samples. For example, in the UK, most metallurgical testing labs use upright compound microscopes, however on the Continent and in certain parts of the USA, they favour inverted microscopes for the same tasks. So where multi-nationals are replicating labs across the globe, we find specifications can vary substantially.

Fortunately Olympus microscopes are not dissimilar in design to Lego kits. We select the components you need to create the tailor-made microscope you want.

Upright compound microscopes

The latest Olympus microscope for metallography is the Olympus BX53.
It has multiple observation modes - these being reflected and transmitted light illumination as standard with fluorescence and darkfield illumination as options.
It is ergonomically designed with easy focusing adjustable to either-side to suit right and left handed users.
It has an X/Y travel range of 50mm through 150mm
It accommodates samples up to 65mm thick as standard, other models can take thicker samples.
Now with LED illumination options and encoding of nosepieces, a combination can easily be constructed to suit
your exact requirements.

Its UIS2 objective lenses are leading edge minimizing the aberrations which reduce resolution.
The UIS2 high quality transmittance glass and coating is flat over an ultra-wide band wave length. This, coupled with the design of the tube lens in the optical system ensures clear, naturally coloured images faithful to the original sample even with digital imaging.
It offers the brightest darkfield image ever due to its new semi-apochromatic objective lens.
In ultra-low magnification the UIS2's depolarizer removes spot flare in low reflection specimens.

In short it is a solidly built, powerful and flexible all-rounder.

Stereo microscopes

For low magnification microscopy, Olympus offer two stereo microscope ranges: the SZ2 and SZX2 series.

The SZ2 is a simple stereo solution offering sharp, high-contrast 3D images with natural colour fidelity.
It combines this high performance with comfort thanks to its Comfortview eyepieces which allow your eyes to focus more quickly and move naturally giving natural agreeable vision.

The SZX2 comprises machines designed both with the flexibility and sensitivity to suit the most demanding of research projects,
yet with the robust efficiency needed for the testing lab workhorse.

The zoom ratio of the SZX16 is now a world leading 16.4:1. With parfocal objectives, it can go from 3.5x to 230x seamlessly. That's an effectiveness zoom ratio of 65.7:1.

An Olympus correction ring means that the objective lens can obtain sharp images even through 5mm of water or plastic. This is a first for a stereo microscope.

Distortion-free plan objectives can be used to correct doming distortion errors typically found in stereo microscopes.

The SXZ10 can be set with up maximised depth of field to minimise the amount of refocusing needed on routine tasks.

The tilting tube allows comfortable viewing from either seated or standing position.

Starting with the research based SZX16 or the testing based SZX10, we can tailor the microscope to fit your exact needs and to be flexible enough to suit a dynamic working environment.

Inverted compound microscopes


The Olympus GX series are a very well designed range of inverted compound metallurgical microscopes.

They have all the benefits of the upright compound microscope, for example the world-class UIS2 optics, wavefront aberration control, natural colour reproduction and spot-flare removal.

Our most popular model is the GX51.
It combines superb performance and reliability and is designed for user comfort and efficiency.
It was specifically designed so that its most frequently used operating controls are located on the front.
The tilting tube allows the user to work in both a seated and a standing position.
It has a single lever to switch between light- and dark-field observation - the brightest dark-field ever.

Biological microscopes

Olympus has continued its three pronged approach of system flexibility, ergonomic and imaging ithrough into its BX3 range of clinical microscopes. 

This means that high performace and productivity comes with with greater user comfort, uncompromising quality and amazing versatility.

The BX3 microscope series are designed with clinical lab workflow in mind. They are modular and flexible capable of being easily adapted to many different procedures.


As with All Olympus microscopes, you are guaranteed world-class optics with the UIS2 optical system.

Its ranges of objectives and filters are each specifically designed for specific applications e.g. PLN objectievs for histochemically stained specimens; UPFLN and SAPO objectives for pathology where a higher degree of chromatic correction is required, and no-cover objectives are ideal for observing smear specimens without a cover plate.

Naturally fluorite objectives are available across the range, although pathologists favour the UPLFLN and exquisite spectral apochromat (SAPO) series. These being at the cutting edge - ensuring spherical and chromatic aberration correction.

Using mixed-matrix brightfield LED technology, Olympus has developed true-colour LED lighting designed for the most commonly usied stains (purple, blue and red).

This is great in terms of continuity and consistency, particulalry as halogen lamps vary tremendously as the power input changes. In addition, LEDs have very low running costs and are more environmentally friendly.

Our most popular model in this range is thecompact, space-saving BX43.

Its rigid Y shaped frame coupled with easy to use front controls and colour-matched LED brightfield illumination makes it a great workhorse.
It can be a dedicated specialist or a flexible system.
It is perfect for long-term brightfield screening and can be extended for fluorescence.
